1956

the news theme used 1956 1985 majestic fanfare , composed charles williams. 1956 until 1980s version used abridged version performed queen s hall light orchestra, recording made in 1943. each bulletin opened clip top story of day, title abc news superimposed on footage. later, onscreen approach replaced generic graphic title sequence. in 1982, celebrate abc s 50th anniversary, new version of theme commissioned, incorporated both orchestral , new electronic elements. exception of period in mid-1980s, during synthesised theme arranged sydney musician tony ansell used 12 months or so, used on radio until august 1988, , on television until 1985. reworking (up 1 tone)of majestic fanfare (essentially original orchestration 1 tone) arranged richard mills , recorded in 1988 sydney symphony orchestra.


the 1988 orchestration still used exclusively abc s radio news bulletins across stations, except triple j, uses 1991 remix of original majestic fanfare , , newsradio, has used specially-composed themes since inception. original theme package written peter wall , tony ansell.


1985

the abc refreshed structure , in 1985 when 7 o clock news , following current affairs programme (at time, nationwide) combined form abc national (usually known national ) , moved 6.30pm. news theme used best endeavours , written alan hawkshaw. piece of music @ time, , still, theme channel 4 news in uk.


1985–1997

after national deemed unsuccessful, same year news refreshed again new set, graphics, , theme, composed tony ansell & peter wall. theme used 20 years, after refresh in 1998. in 2010, sampled , remixed group pendulum , revised work went on placed #11 on triple j hottest 100 chart on australia day 2011.


1998–2005

in 1998, set updated, new opener featuring light blue globe , abc logo introduced, , theme remained same tweaked. graphics changed match new look.


2005–2010

the theme abc news changed on australia day (26 january) 2005, , written martin armiger , john gray , couple of years bore resemblance original peter wall / tony ansell work in opening signature notes. wall challenged abc , successful in reaching agreement. opening notes removed , work re-arranged in 2010. new made use of orange , blue globe motif. @ same time set , graphics received major overhaul fit in look. package used until 21 july 2010, day before launch of abc news.


2010–2017

with launch of abc news on 22 july, 7pm bulletins across australia had graphics overhaul match of abc news. opener replaces blue/orange globe style series of sliding panels, featuring images specific each state. theme 2005-2010 era remixed martin armiger, composer, giving more upbeat, synthesised feel. new south wales, queensland, northern territory, tasmania, victoria, western australia , act have new sets, built match abc news set. graphics have changed match sliding panels , more akin feel of abc news in 2010.


abc news channel

in january 2010, abc announced dedicated 24-hour digital television news channel, named abc news launched during year.


the new channel commenced preliminary broadcasting promo loop in july 2010, abc re-numbering abc hd channel 20 logical channel number 24.


the abc news channel officially launched abc news @ 7.30pm australian eastern standard time on 22 july 2010 , simulcast first hour of transmission on abc. news channel utilises abc s existing resources including more 1000 journalists in 60 newsrooms across australia along 12 foreign bureaux.
